Writing experiment 3

20.08.2019In Writing

Let's continue with this. After Shellville and Gerdalla I'm now even nervous before clicking that random article link. Sooner or later I'll have to tie some of them together.

The random article

Joypur, Purulia - a block in division in subdivision of district in Indian state. Very specific location. Let's read the article and find anything that's not mind-numbingly boring.

  • A Cummunity Development Block - This seem to be common in India, centraly planned development for multiple villages to improve agricultural production, infrastructure, educations and transform social life. Sound like a potential conflict for the story, if the government forces its own vision over the inhabitants who like their own way.
  • Part of Red corridor - The region that exprience considerable left-wing extermist insurgency. It's otherwise impoverished, illiterate, overpopulated region with mostly tribal population and non-diversified economy, solely agriculture based. This sounds like a conflict again. It has potential to present wise and primitive tribals, imperialism vs nature, materialism vs idealism. It does sound like... well: Avatar, Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves... I'll have to be extremely catious to avoid falling into clishes.

Exposition

We have poor, semi-tribal people on the civilization border, Maoism-styled left extremists working to get the area under their control, government official interensted only in production. The village of Jopur is their next target.

The approach

This is not a simple scene like I had with first scene. I'll need to build it similarly like building a character: desire, obstacle, plan, conflict and consequences.

  • Desire: A character or multiple characters have a desire, they want something from this scene.
  • Obstacle: To get what they want, they must overcome an obstacle. The obstacle can be the environment (somebody is inprisoned or lost in the woods), other characters with conflicting wants, psychological state of the character (fear, lack of knowledge, unwillingness) or the society (social rules, institutions)
  • Plan: This may be hidden from the reader and can fail, but it sets the course of action the craracters will take.
  • Conflict: The way the characters driven by desire, overcome the obstacles and reach a new state. It can be a fight
  • Consequences: After the conflict is resolved, the world or character is changed. One character gained something, another has lost. Stakes are higher or previous actions paid off.

Let's see this character by character:

  • Benjamin
    • Situation: His team is kidnapped and imprisoned. He find himself on the enemy terirory but nobody knows he's there.
    • Desire: Escape and report what happened.
    • Obstacle: Brootherhood who took control of the village.
    • Plan: Exit the building, sneak out, find a way back to estate.
  • Brotherhood leader
    • Situation: They kinapped the collectors.
    • Desire: Gain control over the village.
    • Obstacle: Unknown to him, one of the collectors is still free.
    • Plan: Use the collectors as hostages to gain control.
  • Village leader
    • Situation: His village become a battlefield when Brotherhood kidnapped collectors from Town.
    • Desire: Better living for his people.
    • Obstacle: Conflict with town could be disaster for the village. Brotherhood seem violent.
    • Plan:
  • Neviad
    • Situation: Brotherhood kidnapped the collectors.
    • Desire: Continue helping brotherhood so her village can get better rule.
    • Obstacle: Village leader is afraid of action
    • Plan: Use brotherhood to make her the leader

Scene Outline

  • He returns in trying to hatch a plan
  • Somebody enters and almost discovers him
